Cross border jewelry design using carbon fiber composite materials

Impossible Objects is a 3D printing and materials company that is at the forefront of composite based additive manufacturing technology (CBAM). Unlike traditional applications of carbon fiber, this innovative process enables the material to be printed into complex three-dimensional designs. This series is made by combining carbon fiber fabric with PEEK (a high-performance thermoplastic matrix material).

The LACE Carbon series will be the first jewelry collection produced using this new technology. This new type of composite material is lightweight, strong, and biocompatible - making it very suitable for wearable components.

The carbon fiber layer is compressed and melt

Step 1: Use PEEK to 3D print carbon fiber fabric

Carbon fiber/PEEK is a high-performance composite component composed of long fiber materials and thermoplastic matrix materials. It is stronger, lighter, and tougher than traditional carbon fiber materials, and can withstand high temperature applications.

The printer prints a layer of PEEK onto carbon fiber fabric and stacks all layers into a stack at the end of the process. Then print all 396 layers of fabric sheets in sequence to complete the geometric shape of the carbon fiber sheet.

Step 2: The carbon fiber layer is compressed and fused

Once the carbon fiber layer is printed with PEEK, the fabric sheet will be sorted, compressed, and melted in the furnace.

Step 3: Use medium sandblasting to polish the workpiece

After merging each layer into a whole, transfer it to the medium sandblasting chamber to remove uncoated fibers and expose its final product.
