After more than half a century of development, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon fiber has gone through three generations of product development. Since 2010, the third generation of carbon fiber, which has been successfully developed, has achieved an effective combination of high strength and high stiffness characteristics, and is expected to become the focus of future development of high-performance carbon fiber materials.
In the field of third-generation high modulus carbon fiber, Ningbo Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Sciences has made phased progress. In January 2016, Ningbo Institute of Materials, Chinese Academy of Sciences took the lead in developing domestic M55J high modulus carbon fiber with tensile strength of 4.86GPa and tensile modulus of 541GPa.
From 2016 to 2023, Ningbo Materials Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other enterprises have made breakthroughs in the tensile strength and tensile modulus of carbon fiber.
In May 2023, Professor Yang Xiaoping's team from Beijing University of Chemical Technology used domestically produced M40X carbon fiber developed by Guangwei Composite Materials Company as the raw material, and constructed a rigid flexible interface by using polyamide acid polyether amine block copolymers with different ratios of rigid/flexible segments, significantly improving the interfacial toughness of domestically produced M40X composite materials.
